DIY Recycled Wax Melts
Since becoming a home owner, my love of candles has
increased in quite an unhealthy manner. I literally cannot walk down the home aisle in Tesco or B&M without leaving with a candle in my basket which is a
habit that my boyfriend is finding extremely hard to accept…
It has only been recently that I’ve gained an awareness of
the amount of wastage that comes with constantly burning candles on the daily.
Not only am I left with a number of oddly shaped glasses and jars, but I have
also found that there is always a significant amount of wax left at the bottom of
the jars, which to put it bluntly, annoys the s**t out of me.
Before this realisation, I would usually have thrown my old candle
jars out and start burning a new one with no thought but as a change, I decided
to try something different and make the leftover wax into melts. 🙋 Read on to find out my Handy Hack instructions. 😃
- Old measuring jug
- A recycled wax melt tray or a silicone ice-cube tray
- Pair of Pliers (if needed)
- Old spoon
* At this stage you may have several different scented candles, you can either choose to melt them all together or to continue these steps separately for each scent.
2. The task now is to remove the metal wick holder at the bottom of the candle. This can be a bit tricky and make sure to take your time. I find the best way to remove the wick is to take a pair of pliers and force it out, sometimes they can be a tad difficult!
3. You should now have an empty candle jar that will need a quick wash and this can be stored away for later use.
4. Now it is time to make the wax melts 😁🕯 You will need to pop your measuring jug into the microwave and setting the micro for 60 seconds. Use your spoon to gently mix the wax around and continue the 60 second blasts until the wax has turned into liquid. This is the perfect stage to remove any traces of candle wick or dirt from the mixture using your spoon.
5. At this stage you can carefully begin filling your wax melt tray with the liquid wax. I must stress that you should complete this step in good time to ensure the wax doesn't begin to set in the measuring jug.
* Some people may choose to use a silicone ice cube tray instead of a wax melt tray at this stage, either is perfectly acceptable. 🙂 The above image was a recycled wax melt tray that I kept, every little helps when it comes to recycling!
6. So you have completed the hardest part, now it is time to wait for the wax to set. I would recommend leaving them for a couple of hours or if you want to be extra sure, leave them overnight to set. When the melts turn to an opaque colour, they should be ready to go 👍😎
What Will You Need?

- Pair of Pliers (if needed)
- Old spoon
How To
1. So you will want to get your old leftover candles and carefully use the sharp knife to cut around the metal wick holder at the bottom of the candle. The easiest way to do so is to slice the remaining wax into chunks and try to remove them with the knife and pop them into your measuring jug.* At this stage you may have several different scented candles, you can either choose to melt them all together or to continue these steps separately for each scent.

And finally...you can now enjoy the beautiful scents around your home 🥀🍋👃
The above tray was made from 6 small leftover glade candles that I would have thrown straight into the bin, now I can enjoy a full set of (basically) free wax melts 🙌
